An FDA advisory panel has backed Grail’s Galleri test, a development that could accelerate efforts to bring multi-cancer screening into routine medical care.

The test analyzes chemical signals in the blood that may indicate cancer and can suggest where in the body a tumor originated.

Its supporters say Galleri could identify cancers before symptoms appear, when treatment may be more effective, and potentially expand screening beyond the limited number of cancers covered by standard tests.

But the test’s benefits remain under scrutiny. It has not yet been shown conclusively to reduce cancer deaths, and false-positive results could lead to anxiety, invasive follow-up procedures and unnecessary costs.

The panel’s recommendation is influential but not binding. The FDA will make the final decision after reviewing the evidence, including data on accuracy, clinical outcomes and the test’s role alongside established screening methods.

If authorized, Galleri would represent a major step toward blood-based cancer screening, though experts caution that it would complement—not replace—mammograms, colonoscopies and other proven tests.
