A lung drug may offer an unexpected way to study biological aging. But researchers caution that the finding is an early signal, not proof of an anti-aging treatment.

• A Nature Biotechnology study used six blood-based proteomic aging clocks to assess whether rentosertib, an experimental drug for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, influenced markers associated with aging.

• Researchers analyzed samples from 42 patients in a 12-week Phase 2a clinical trial. All six clocks estimated younger biological ages among participants receiving the drug, while placebo participants showed little change or slight increases.

• Rentosertib significantly changed the trajectories of 326 proteins. One dosing regimen also produced shifts that generally moved opposite typical age-related protein patterns identified in more than 55,000 UK Biobank participants.

• The study was small and brief, and the participants had serious lung disease. It remains unclear whether the results reflect broader effects on aging biology or improvements related to pulmonary fibrosis.
