The test reportedly involved the GJ-11, an unmanned aircraft designed to penetrate heavily defended airspace and conduct intelligence, surveillance and strike missions.

The operation took place aboard the Type 076 amphibious assault ship Sichuan, which is equipped with an electromagnetic catapult and arresting gear similar to systems used on aircraft carriers.

The successful demonstration suggests China is exploring how large, low-observable drones could operate from ships traditionally used to deploy helicopters and short-takeoff aircraft.

Analysts say carrier-based stealth drones could extend a fleet’s reach while reducing risks to pilots, though questions remain about the aircraft’s operational range, payload and readiness.

The test also underscores Beijing’s broader effort to integrate unmanned systems into naval operations as it seeks to strengthen its ability to monitor and project power across contested waters.
