Government-aligned forces are preparing operations aimed at reversing Houthi gains and restoring control over strategic areas.

The campaign could test the fragile calm that has reduced large-scale fighting in recent years but failed to resolve Yemen’s political and humanitarian crisis.

The Houthis, who control the capital, Sanaa, and much of northern and western Yemen, are expected to resist any advance with missile, drone and ground attacks.

The offensive also risks disrupting diplomatic efforts to negotiate a broader cease-fire and a political settlement.

Yemen’s conflict began in 2014, when the Houthis seized Sanaa and expanded southward, prompting a Saudi-led military intervention the following year. The war has killed and displaced millions, while leaving much of the population dependent on humanitarian assistance.

Any territorial gains by government forces could alter the balance of power, but renewed fighting may further strain civilians and complicate international efforts to end the conflict.
